Running 2009

Shall resume running once 2009 starts. Like 2nd Jan..yup really! Since if I’m gonna pay it with my life by doing another marathon, might as well to start really preparing this time round. Unlike the last, where I :

1) Was running really well for the first 24 km

2) But when I saw other runners stretching, I tried to be smart aleck and stretch too – by lifting my leg up onto the top of bench, attempting a hammie stretch, but ended up with my first-ever running cramp

3) Then it was a pathetic sight of me limp-walk-run for the next 5km

4) From 33km – 38km, I almost gave up, and walked for the entire 5km. Was sighting at the bus stop at Geylang longingly and wanted to catch a snooze

5) Came alive again when I caught sight of the Singapore Flyer, knowing the finishing line is near.

6) Put BC’s “Sea of Love” on repeat mode, knowing that it can accelerate me for the final lap. (I AM NOT THAT PATHETIC BY LIKING THAT SONG!)

Done with running

Well maybe not really. As painful as the run was, I still limped my way through to the finishing line. Doing a marathon takes a lot of courage, much less the fact I barely trained this tIme round, forgot sunscreen, cap, sunnies. A checklist next time, maybe

The final run before D Day

Fingers crossed that I can successfully do a 30km.

The inevitable upgrade

Exactly a year ago, I made the conscious decision to get a technical running shoe, because obviously wearing a swoosh shoe with nary support does no justice to your ankles or feet, hence I got this. A year on, after clocking only 700km with it, I’m told I have to upgrade, otherwise it would be too much stress for my feet, since I’ve decided to die gloriously (by doing a full marathon).

So, I got this yesterday, when I went shopping with Mark. For he got himself a decent pair as well, away the NB army shoes!

The non-plussed runners

The day before AHM, I suddenly developed an aching body accompanied by a fever – not a good sign. I was desperate to get well for the run. I slept the whole sat away, popped aspirins and panadols. Mum was none too pleased that I was determined to make it. Thankfully when Mark picked me on sun morning, I was feeling much better. I decided to take it slow just to make sure I would turn out fine.
In reality, this run was the stuff nightmares are made of. When you mandate thousands of nsmen to run, many who are unwilling, you’ll get endless bottlenecks, much to my irritation. However I’m glad I didn’t give and went on to complete the run, albeit in quite an embarrassing time. Raar to muddy shoes!
